Chapters 1-4

In the first four chapters, you are introduced to Winston Smith, the protagonist. You learn that he lives in a dilapidated apartment complex in London. Winston works for the government, who are in total control of their society. You learn about all of the different ways that they constantly monitor their people through the use of the Thought Police, Big Brother, and telescreens. There are posters plastered all over the inside and outside of buildings and anywhere you look throughout the city that have a picture of a face and they read "Big Brother is Watching You". Telescreens are a contraption mounted in every apartment used to see what the occupant is doing at all times. They are also used as a way to communicate, like a t.v. news station. You also learn that Winston is against the way of thinking trying to be forced upon society. He starts a diary to document what he can't talk about as well as to leave a way for people of the future to learn about how life used to be. He remembers a time before the government had total control, when they took his mother and sister away to start the complete take over. These first four chapters give us an introduction not only to Winston, but also to the world he's living in.

InfraGard

InfraGard is a non-profit program through the FBI. They exchange information about terrorism, intelligence, criminal and security issues. They share their intelligence to prevent hostile acts against the United States. After the correct training and education, anyone can be a part of InfraGard. Once a part of a chapter, members can gain access to information that can help them protect their assets as well as using that information to protect the government. The FBI uses special agents to supervise the InfraGard chapters and members.
The part that I find most interesting about this is that anyone can join and be a member. It seems like an organization that would require special training and education. I had never heard of InfraGard before this project so I leared a lot about it by reading an article online. I think it's cool that a large group of people voluntarily spend their time getting information to protect our country and citizens.
